How And Why Wrist Watches Were First Created

by Gregg Hall

The first watches were pocket watches used by rich men. A popular fashion item among gentry they were kept in the top pocket of a long waistcoat. They were also extremely large and bulky back then.

The first wristwatches were worn by women as fashion accessories. They were small and designed to look delicate on a female's wrist. As many new fashion statements are they were very expensive and worn primarily by society women in order to show off their wealth. Surprisingly they were not considered practical and rather just a fad that people would soon get bored with. Of course this was not the case.

Wristwatches really started to be used as a practical item during the Boer war and even then it could be claimed that it was accident. What they actually did was strap their pocket watches around their wrists in order to be able to tell the time quickly. These were found so practical on the battlefield that it became mandatory to wear them on the wrist.

It was not until 1915 when Rolex decided it the right time to introduce them into the market. These wristwatches came with leather straps and much like the watches today they had a buckle to fasten them. These proved to be a huge success and the age the wristwatch was born.

The real turn around for watches again was the war. Heroes were returning from the Great War sporting wristwatches and an item deemed originally to be for women suddenly had masculine connotations. Again it was Rolex that took the initiative and introduced a line of wristwatches solely for men. It soon became apparent that wristwatches were far more practical than pocket watches and they quickly took over the market place.

The next significant change was Quartz watches in the 1970s. With the computer age looming these watches seems incredibly futuristic. Initially they were expensive, but the more popular they became the more the price came down and before long every hip youngster had one.

The popularity in digital watches increased as new features were developed for them. Over the years they have had games, alarms, stopwatches, calculators and world time.

Nowadays everyone has owned a wristwatch, as much for fashion as telling the time. The straps are easy to fix on and they come in a variety of styles to suit everyone's taste.

It seems though he age of the wristwatch is disappearing. Everyone now owns mobile phones and they have all the features of a digital watch and more. Perhaps one day mobiles themselves will be worn on wrists. It does seem like it could evolve that way.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
The Annoyance Of Wrist Watch Strap Repair

by Gregg Hall

One annoying aspect about watches is how easily their straps break. They have that annoying little pin that slides into the hole at the top of the strap then fixes onto the watch itself. But the strap constantly falls off. If you have a watch for more than two years it will probably happens 4 or 5 times. Usually it can by fixed by yourself. Easily done, just slide the pin back into place. The problem comes when you bend that pin or lose it. Where do you get a new one?

Well of course you take it to a watchmakers ot be fixed. Basically you get a new strap. It costs very little and takes a small amount of time to be done. There is virtually no waiting.

The problem comes when the watchmaker asks what strap you want. Nowadays there are so many different types. There are leather and metal straps as well as all different colors and designs. You came into to get your watch fixed and you are now faced with the difficult but strangely pleasurably experience of trying to decide what strap will look the best. Which one will give you the most attention?

When you walk out of that shop you may as well be wearing a whole new watch it so little resembles what it looked like a mere five minutes ago. Yes by all means get your strap repaired just remember it is now regarded as one of the most important aspects of the watch and can change its whole feel.

I remember I bought an awful watch from the market precisely for the reason that it was cheap. Nasty, but cheap. Like all cheap things from the market it broke within days. I caught the strap in a door and it ripped off. So off I went to the watch repair to get a new one. When I came out of that shop I still had the same awful digital clock face, but instead of the sweaty plastic strap I had a gorgeous green leather one. I loved my watch after that and it has to be said it drew a number of compliments.

The problem comes of course when you have an old watch and the strap breaks maybe for the first time. You go to the repair shop intent on getting the same strap and they no longer have it in stock. In fact it is no longer made. The best advice for that situation is trying the Internet. If that doesn't work there are enough straps out there to find a similar looking one. It may not quite be the same, but I suppose their is nothing you can do.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
A Look At The History Of Watches And New Innovations

by Gregg Hall

It seems like watches have been around forever. Nobody alive today remembers a time when there hasn't been watches. Over that time period there have many stylse and many new innovations. The mechanical watch, the quartz watch. The list is endless. Today it seems s we have given up finding new ways of showing the time and any new innovations are normally to do with style.

How and where we wear the watch has become important. Anything new that comes in is basically a redesign of an old type and sometimes it hard to realize that it wasn't long ago that this type of watch was actually invented. This article is an overview of types of watches.

Firstly the quartz watch. This is a type of watch that first came into the public eye in the early seventies. It was and is a digital watch that uses Quartz crystal to power it. Over the years it has advanced immensly and has many features including stopwatches and timers.
The original wristwatch was the analogue. This type of watch has individual hour, minute and second hands. Nowadays most analogue watches wind back automatically, though there was a time, and you can still buy them now, that they had to be wound back daily by the owner.

There are other more specialist watches used by the army and divers. These have watches have been put into the marketplace after being used by these groups. It was the Navy SEALS that first used the Luminox watches for example. They were perfect for the SEALS because they could check the time under water. Of course these watches are also waterproof.

One innovation of watches in recent years has been the number of features that you can get on them. As well as the aforementioned stopwatches and timers there have been digital watches with calculators, alarms, recording devices and backlights. Even analog watches have got into the act. Some expensive ones also have stopwatches and display at the side of the face the month and date.

As a fashion accessory watches have come into their own. Watches can come with leather, metal, rubber and plastic straps. You can now walk into a watchmaker's and change the strap if you don't like the one it came with. Some sport watches make the stopwatch and timer the biggest feature. They often have very flashy stopwatches where even lap times can be counted and sometimes saved. At the front of these will be two large buttons to start and stop the timer.

In recent years though these watches have been taken over by the mobile phone. These can do everything a watch can do and more. One thinks the only way the watch can survive is by going back to the old times and selling self as an attractive fashion accessory.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
How Quartz Watches Have Revolutionized The Watch Industry

by Gregg Hall

Everyone knows Quartz watches. The brand name is so famous and has been with us so long even the poorest people in the world have heard of them. They may of even owned one. They are possibly the most popular form of watch in the world. More than likely most of us have owned a Quartz at some point in our lives.

But do we really know the significance of these watches. How they have helped to revolutionize watch making. Very few people do understand this precisely because they have become so commonplace. Rather like mobile phones. So in this brief article I would just like to familiarize people with Quartz watches and what they have meant in the past.

A Quartz is a crystal that has the power to keep time better than any other known method. And you thought it was just any other wristwatch. In fact the discovery of Quartz is known to be the most important in watch making history, the crystal small enough to be used in wristwatches yet also incredibly powerful.

They first came in to the marketplace in the seventies and were unsurprisingly expensive, retailing in the USA at $500. They originated as a digital watch and for a time were the most sought after consumer item. But it was only really businessmen that could afford them. Nowadays of course the price of them has come right down and it is common to have one. It has even become untrendy with the introduction of kinetic watches and other innovations.

The Quartz is of course a digital watch and very much unlike its mechanical counterpart. They usually have a number of buttons that can be pressed to change the display to a stopwatch, time or the date.

The original Quartz watches were a little different in the fact that there digits were a bright red, but they didn't have the features of today's modern watches. It was there newness that was attractive. Over time the LSD light displaying the time was toned down to what we know today as the black digits.

It is easy today to disregard the Quartz watch as something that is just there. Perhaps it is losing its significance with the introduction of mobile phones that not only tell the time, but can be used to ring friends, play games and send messages. At the same time Quartz watches is one of those inventions that was a major breakthrough in technology. Perhaps without them today's society just would not be the same.

Remember this when you next see one and perhaps we can all help to reposition it as an item of significance, even if in the future it becomes merely a fashion accessory.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
The Attraction Of Mido Watches

by Gregg Hall

Mido watches have a strong 90 year history, which really attracts itself to watch connoisseurs. They are of good quality and surprisingly given their reputation relatively cheap.

The company was first set up back in 1919 and went about making watches that were innovative and attractive. The first Mido watch that really stirred the imagination of the public was the Multifort. It had all the appearance of a classic mechanical watch except it wound itself up. The first of its kind and it of course sent people rushing into the shops to buy it. What they brought was not just automatic but quality, a word that would be connected to Mido for years to come. The watches had strong springs and accurate time keeping.

Its second innovation was to put on the market a watch with all the hands moving in the center. Before then the second, minute and hour times were separated. It sounds like nothing now, but at the time it was a revelation and another big seller for Mido.

And there inventions kept coming, just about keeping up with public demand. They developed upto that point the strongest ever winding mechanism. Their next contribution a few years was the smallest ever ladies' watch.

Mido watches were associated with quality so much that there was a comic strip dedicated to them. One all about a Mido Robot who never stopped, just kept going and going.

The single shell design a year later, known as the commander watch helped to improve watches durability. No longer were people taking back watches after only 6 moths use. Instead Mido had managed to develop a model that would outlast many watches of that time by a couple of years. No doubt the competition was suitable annoyed.

Moving into the seventies and the company helped develop waterproof watches with the Aquadura Crown Sealing system. It was not the first waterproof watch, but soon became recognized as the best in quality. They again sold well, people impressed that they could go swimming in them, timing their laps without the watch ever becoming damaged.

Finally they introduced the world timer. A watch that could show the time in any part of the world. This of course made them very popular with businessmen who no longer needed to run around asking people who speak another language the time.

All these innovations imprinted the name Mido on the public's memory. Many other companies would of rested on there laurels knowing that they could bring out anything and it would sell well. Mido to their credit has not done this bringing out watches that have challenged the competition to do it better.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
Why Mechanical Watches Still Have A Place In The Watch Market

by Gregg Hall

Mechanical watches are the old fashioned watches that need to be wound up every day. They have no pretensions about them, no gimmicks just good old fashioned watch making at its best. Some people swear by them and will not go near a digital watch. They say they trust the old style more. Mechanical watches they say give a more accurate time. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact they feel they have more control over how it works, that they are the ones every night winding it up and making it tick again. Maybe they like the more authentic style; the big round clock face, roman numerals and shiny watch straps. Whatever the reason they are still incredibly popular with consumers, and despite strong competition from their digital sons look here to stay.

These watches tend to appeal to the connoisseurs. People that know how watches work. So how do they work? Well a mechanical watch is like an engine, it is powered by a mechanical set of gears. To get these gears moving we wind the spring until it can't be wound up and anymore then let that spring release it self slowly, turning the gearing, until it is fully extended and then that is when we wind it back. The gears work on all the three hands of the clock; the second hand, the minute hand and the hour hand. The ticking that you hear when you put your ear to the clock is the second hand.

In modern watches there up to 40 wheels and springs working together to give good time. But perhaps what you didn't know is that jewels also play a part in the working of a watch. These are actually real jewels and no doubt are the most expensive things in the watch, though they are used because they are the least expensive of quality gemstones. They work because their smooth surface allows the cogs to run consistently and hence keep accurate time.

You may ask why digital watches have not taking over completely. They are far easier to use, have many more function plus are worn by almost everybody. Who wears mechanical watches nowadays? They are mostly worn by people who want a watch to look good. They do have a mark of quality precisely because they are older and are more expensive to make. The disadvantages are that they tend to have to be serviced every few years as they can lose the time. An advantage is that they have no battery and can run forever. A good mechanical watch can be expensive but it will always remain its just out of reach of digital relation because of its attractiveness and the ability to be more than just something you need to keep track of the time.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
How Luminox Watches Became Famous From Their Military Watches

by Gregg Hall

Luminox watches are a brand of watch that illuminate the watch face to show the time. So when you are sitting in the dark and you need to know whether or not it is time to get up for work you can press a button which actives a back light and shows the exact time.

The word luminox comes from Latin meaning light night, which is the exact description of what it does. It was first invented by two business partners in Switzerland looking for a way to break through into the market. It became a popular idea and perhaps surprising an idea that they managed to sell to the Navy SEALS. It's usefulness to the SEALS is obvious and became important to them when diving. A diver could set their time for how long they wanted to be under then know that the time was up precisely because they could illuminate the watch face.

With this success they launched a brand of watches into the market place approved by the seals themselves. A breakthrough for the company and a big seller. It became popular particularly with men who bought it for its now masculine image.

The first Navy SEAL watches were made out of plastic, but it wasn't long before they bought out a new brand with a metal casing, another success. These watches although just a small change from the original looked and felt strong. The company knew they were onto a real winner and intelligently kept on marketing through the SEALS, using a number of styles. These slightly different versions appealed to the wider group of women and children.

It would be wrong to say these watches were merely gimmicks. They were becoming known for their quality alone using lasting batteries, sapphire glass crystal and anti-reflective coating.

Things got better for the company only a few years later when the American Air Force asked for their own brand of watches to be made. The company was of course quick to say yes and developed the SEAL model to suit pilots on their bombing missions. Soon Luminox had the right to provide watches for the entire aviation industry and the potential for a new line of product for the average consumer.

Again the sales were a brilliantly successful. The Air force was only too willing to put their name to the product in an attempt obviously improve their image. Luminox showed the watch world that you don't have to be innovative in your watch design, that you don't have to be constantly finding new ways to improve the watch. Instead advertising is just as important, cornering a niche in a big market that is powerful and will promote the product not only because it is good quality but because it is good way to improve there own image.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
Why Wenger Watches Continue To Be One Of The Most Desired

by Gregg Hall

In 1893 the famous Wenger watches first came into existence. It was at a time when watches were as much fashion accessories as they were used to tell the time. Wenger watches did nothing to change that fact. Instead they glorified in it. Wenger watches were designed to look good. They were designed for people with too much money whose main concentration in life was how good they looked. The time was a secondary factor; perhaps they never bothered to even look.

The history of the watch as a fashion accessory can be tracked back to the very earliest watches on sale in France in 1574. They were more like a diamond necklaces than a watch and such were very expensive and very few people owned one. If you were lucky enough to own a watch, and it was limited to the upper classes, then you were dealt with a lot of respect. Or if the opportunity arose robbed of it.

Watches as a luxury item did not change for hundreds of years. Why this is not certain, however perhaps it has something to with them kept as merely an object of fashion. Rather than finding new ways to improve them or even to make them cheaper the next major shift seems to the introduction of waistcoats with pockets that the watch could slip into.

It was no better in England than it was in France. Diamond bearings rendered them unaffordable to all but a few people. It was not until machines were developed to make watches that they became more available to the general public. In the early part of the 19th century these machines were developed and started to make watches at a good rate, though these watches still associated with the upper classes. Much through habit rather anything else. When it became apparent there was money to be made from the watches, factories started to appear in the cities and the prices came down drastically. It still wasn't a practical item however and people were rushing to buy them merely to look good.

However the company has gone through many major shifts. In 1895 a group called Delsberg took over then the company merged soon after with Schweitzer. For almost ten years the company remained unchanged until 1907 when Theo Wenger became sole owner. The biggest change for the company came only one year later when Wenger started to market Swiss army knives and then in 2003 the Swiss Business Tools globally.

The Wenger Company have always maintained a high quality which also means expensive and today their watches are on sale for between $150 to $500. With the high quality of these watches that may well me a bargain.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
How Clocks And Watches Have Evolved Over Time

by Gregg Hall

Time is precious to all of us. We run our lives by knowing what time it is. Pick Johnny up from school at 4, cook tea at 5 in time for Phillip's arrival at 7.30. Finally sit down at eight for the next episode of Eastenders. The world is run by time whether we like it not and where would be without it. It stops us from being lazy and it organizes our days.

So the invention of time keeping devices has been very important to our history. But it is something that has evolved slowly. Shepherds used to tell the time by the position of the sun and how now we can laugh when all we have to do today is flick back our sleeves and look at our wristwatch to know the time by the exact second.

But how did the wrist watch itself evolve? This short excerpt will take a quick look at major innovations in watch making. The Quartz watch and the Atomic watch. The Quartz watch used crystals to aid the electronically movement of the watch. The first people to introduce this to the world were the Sinclair group. Unfortunately there initial attempt proved to be disastrous. The digital watches looked slick, when the worked they were slick however the battery lasted all of ten days, rendering this invention useless for anything but a fashion accessory.

But the attempt had been made and obviously it was not in vain because only a few years later Texas instruments came up with a Quartz watch that kept the time and it's power for long periods. As well as that they were willing to put it on the market for an affordable price.

Another innovation of watch making is the Atomic clock. Atomic clocks use the element cesium to keep it ticking. Cesium is a silvery metal found in granite and is known by scientist to be the most electropositive element in the periodic table.

What is more amazing about cesium and obviously another reason it was used was because only a small amount is needed and the clock will run for years. The atomic clock is used as the national standard for keeping time in the United States of America.

Nowadays we take time for granted. Our clocks run perfectly and if there is a problem we tend to demand to know why. It ruins our life. Just imagine if you had to try and stop your loved one from leaving the country at noon, only to find when you look down at your watch that it had stopped. Like mobile phones are fast becoming watches have gone from a luxury item to an essential one.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
A Look At The History Of Citizen Watches

by Gregg Hall

Citizen watches first came to the public's attention in 1924. Up to then watches tended to be heavy objects that were fashionable ornaments as much as they were practical items used to tell the time. Citizen watches changed all that by creating a new brand that was thin and light on the wrist as well as having the added benefit of looking good. And what a success they were.

In a few years they became one of the biggest selling watches in history and continue to sell well today.
The reason they have achieved such a niche in the market is due to their quality. A quality that has never diminished, despite the ever growing competition and the temptation to appeal to a broader market.
Secondly they are one of those rare companies that are not afraid to take risks. In a world where major co-operations continue to regurgitate the same old thing, Citizen is intent on reinventing the market. They just won't sit on their laurels, taking the meaning of the word citizen to the extreme.

When Citizen first got going in 1930 there aim seemed to be the first watch company to do everything. They wanted to wipe out the competitive by being inventive. It was the Citizen that first introduced shock resistance to their watches. Up to then watches were easily broken and as a result few people paid out their hard earned cash unless they could afford to replace or fix them. An image of people in expensive suits pulling a pocket watch out of their breast pocket is what springs to mind. Citizen managed to bring watches to the poorer classes by making them more durable.

Later on Citizen made the first professional diving watch. This watch was not only waterproof but featured an electronic depth sensor. Nowadays this is seen on many brands of watches yet it was Citizen who first put them into the market place.

There latest innovation is perhaps the most impressive. It is called the Eco Drive System and as the name suggest it an environmentally friendly watch, using an inbuilt solar panel instead of batteries. Again this is now used by many watch companies, none of them with the originality of citizen. No doubt they will continue with this line while citizen thinks up something else. In fact this seems to be the pattern in the watch world, no one really moving on until Citizen do.

All this has made the company one of the biggest and richest in the world. Today it employs three thousand people continuing to search for new ways to develop the wristwatch. Long may it continue.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
Could The Casio SPF40-1V The Perfect Countdown Watch For Surfers?

by Gregg Hall

Who is the fastest surfer or windsurfer? I don't mean in the world, I mean at that lower profile event or when you are trying out some stunts with friends. If you are like me, you've certainly looked for countdown watches that help you in this pastime. For others it is to help them time themselves. This is invaluable in determining their improvement as they grow in a sport.

The Casio SPF40-1V model is a countdown watch that satisfies both expectations. With it you can do the conventional countdown for five or ten minute start sequences. There are beeps at every second of the last ten seconds. The good thing about the SP40-1V model is that it shows you hours, minutes and seconds simultaneously this helps know precisely when the first gun will go off. Other countdown watches keep you guessing.

You can easily change or switch to stopwatch mode from the countdown mode. The stopwatch mode helps you get accurate records of your finish time. It can also be used for events that run for long periods of time. Anyone who likes to run or walk will also appreciate the benefits of having a stop watch included in their regular watch.

It has a design that is different than regular watches. This one is made for work and not as a dress accessory. It is a lot larger too. However, it is made of plastic and so won't weigh you down. It also controls that a easy to use. It has a kind of thermometer so you can know what the temperature is. If you need to know the pressure, you can. And, lastly, you can get your bearing right with the compass.

It is, however, not as cheap as other Casio watches. You get what you pay for. You pay for what you want. This countdown watch is loaded with features and goes further to ensure it merges great design, features and simplicity.

Before deciding on a countdown watch that is right for you it is best to do a little research. Spend some time on the Internet and at your local watch retailer so you know exactly what you are looking for in a watch. Then once you know what you want you can start searching for the best available prices. The Internet is often the best source you having for finding fantastic deals on merchandise.

If you need a countdown watch to track your surfing or any other sports activity this Casio watch is the best available. Plus you can find a variety of retailers online that offer this watch at big discount prices.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida.
A Review Of The Casio WMP-1V MP3 Audio Wrist Watch

by Gregg Hall

The Casio WMP-1V MP3 is an interesting product. Is it a watch like every regular watch? Yes and no, depending on what you mean by a regular watch. If for you, a watch means a timepiece or any instrument that tells the time, then the answer is a big "Yes". However, if for you it means a small unobtrusive timepiece, then it is not.

Now to another question, Is this an MP3 player? Yes, if you refer to the ability to play files in that audio format. But a big "No" if you think of a player with the capabilities of an iPod.

The Casio WMP-1V MP3t has a lot of features jammed into it for such a small gadget. For its weight (70 grams) it does have a lot of features.

Now let's get into this piece. It has poorly designed buttons since they are not very responsive. You'll have to take out some time just to learn to use them. This is not just a personal opinion. I asked a few users too and they had similar complaints. However, they do their job, though. If you have some time to spend learning the ins and outs of this watch you probably will enjoy all the extras that come with it. But if you are not very technically inclined this watch will not be a good match for you.

The fast-forward and rewind buttons are also used to scan through songs. However, I was not really happy with the mode button. This mp3 player/watch has four modes. You'll have to keep pressing through all the play modes before you can set you equalizer (Yes, this wrist watch also has an equalizer). I guess I'm so used to easier navigation that I've not given due consideration to the fact that there are few buttons. This gives the designers less options.

If you want the best wrist watch, look somewhere else. If you want the best mp3 player, try an iPod. But if you want a bit of both, the Casio WMP-1V MP3 is for you. That is if you don't mind wearing a wristwatch that's about four times your usual size.
This watch is a great piece if you want a secure MP3 player for running and doing other outdoor activities. It definitely is not going to fall off once you have it strapped to your wrist. But for its size I really was just not that impressed. Perhaps if the buttons were a little easier to navigate through then this watch would be more appealing to me, also if it was a tad bit smaller and fit on my wrist in a more natural way.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida.
Buy A Fine Watch To Demonstrate Fashion Sense

by Gregg Hall

Most men aren’t remotely obsessed with fashion, definitely not to the extent that women are. Men as a rule generally have more important things in their life to worry about than keeping up with the latest trends in the fashion world. However, there are several things you can do which will go far to demonstrating a great fashion sense and you don’t have to read GQ or Maxim to do it.

The most important fashion item that all men must own is a great watch and not just any watch but a higher end fine watch that will turn heads and have people asking, “Where did you get that watch?”

Watches are vastly underrated accessories, especially for men. Over recent years fine watches have become much more than just a tool with which to tell time, they are reflections and extensions of one's own unique personality.

A fine quality watch is the surest and most rapid way of putting out an image that exudes confidence. How many guys do you know that have a Drawer full of cheap, inexpensive watches like Timexes for example? Not that there is anything wrong with a Timex. I think they are a good watch for sports activities, but one needs to take it up a notch to demonstrate that they have some sense of style.

Anyone can accumulate a bunch of inexpensive watches throughout their life but what they really should do instead is just invest in one or two fine watches that will last a lifetime. Ideally you want a fine watch like a TAG Heuer or maybe even a quality pre-owned Rolex. I personally prefer the looks of the TAG watches but whatever you taste or your budget you will find a fine watch that will fit you needs online.

A fine watch is quite possible the most important accessory that a man should have. A fine watch says to the world that this is a successful and confident man.

Put away those gaudy 1970’s style gold chains and bracelets like you see on a used car salesman. You do not have to go over board, as a matter of fact quite the opposite. All you have to do is have a fine watch that fits you and your personality and remember you
get what you pay for so purchase the most expensive watch you can afford.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is a marketing consultant to online companies.
